Postpartum Depression and the Role of Pediatrician
Postpartum depression, or sometimes called postnatal depression, is a form of clinical depression which can affect woman after childbirth, in which the prevalence rates can range from 5% until 25 %. Postpartum depression occurs in women after they have carried a child, usually in the first few months, and may last up to several months or even a year.
Symptoms include sadness, fatigue, changes in sleeping and eating patterns, reduced libido, crying episodes, anxiety, and irritability.
Many treatments and programs are designed to reduce the new mother’s suffering from postpartum depression. The importance of mother-baby bonding is the cause. Thus, when mom suffers, so does the baby.Research has shown that baby who are neglected or cared by depressed mother can experience developmental delays.
That is why, American Academic of Pediatrics (AAP) is now recommending pediatricians to do screening on new mothers for the signs of postpartum depression.
